The Once are in concert on Friday, Oct. 21, 2011 at Dublin Street United Church in Guelph. Show time is 8pm, with doors at 7:30. $20 Advance Tickets are available at Ground Floor Music, Magnolia Cafe, and The River Run Centre, as well as at the Book Shelf.

Newfoundland's treasure trio bring powerful tales to life, in expressive melodies, driving rhythms and rich, rich vocal harmony. Add the music of mandolin, fiddle and bouzouki, and the intimate show coming up in one of Guelph's favourite acoustic venues, promises to be an evening of true magic. The Once will resonate melancholy, funny and poignant blend of voices, story and melody.

The opening act is David Ross MacDonald who says " I am thrilled to be a part of this show in Guelph. It is very special to hear The Once in such a beautiful church venue. There's something amazing about the acoustics of such a powerful band in such building."

Also of note is the fact that the newly opened Magnolia Cafe, with a flair for delicious vegan, gluten-free delights will provide catered treats during intermission.

David Ross MacDonald is a fingerstyle guitar specialist aptly called a cross between Nick Drake and Bruce Coburn. This show might be Guelph's last chance to catch the intensely poetic performance of a musician headed next to Quebec.

The Breakmen are appearing live in Guelph for a performance at the eBar, 41 Quebec St on Sunday October 16. Doors are at 9:30 and tickets are $15, $12 for students. The critically acclaimed collective will deliver an engaging, lively on-stage show that is not to be missed.

From Vancouver BC, the band offers strong Canadiana roots songs, with striking harmonies and shared lead vocals, with the mesmerizing musicianship of an adventurous bluegrass quartet ~ including drums and electric guitar!

What started out as an adventurous folk - bluegrass quartet is fast becoming a sharply focused roots music outfit that owes as much to The Band and Blue Rodeo as it does to Bill Monroe and John Hartford.

Nominated previously for 2 Canadian Folk Music Awards, five-piece Vancouver roots outfit The Breakmen are touring in support of their third full-length release,with several performances throughout Ontario.

With Heartwood, The Breakmen plough fertile new ground. The signature sound is still evident, but you’ll also hear touches of soul, classic r&b, a bit of country and a solid taste of roots rock n’ roll.

Members Matthew Lawson, Archie Pateman, Ben Rogalsky and Lee Watson are moving toward more contemporary material and a tougher approach. That there was no first aid administered throughout the medical emergency, for the presumed street person haunts the artist and informs the work. Check out the all important 911 Call, Track 11.

Local hero JEFF BIRD flies to NEW YORK CITY, with COWBOY JUNKIES for an appearance on the Jimmy Fallon show and at Carnegie Hall, during the second week of February.

Every musician dreams of the chance to play Carnegie Hall! After 30 years of practice, Jeff Bird says "It is always an honour to play a legendary concert venue. It can be mind-blowing to realize the performers previously seen on such a stage!"

Jeff Bird has worked in showbiz for over 30 years now, and for more than 20 years has toured with the Cowboy Junkies. He is still excited to be performing with them -- not just full shows at the intimate City Winery in Manhattan -- but also to be performing on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon on February 9th and as part of a much larger celebration of Neil Young’s music at Carnegie Hall on February 10th.

With COWBOY JUNKIES, Bird has appeared on the legendary TRINITY SESSION recording. For more than twenty years has toured the world with them performing in such venues as the Royal Albert Hall, Massey Hall and Television appearances such as Late Night with David Letterman, Late Night with Conan O'Brien, and The Tonight Show with the late Johnny Carson as well as Jay Leno.

BIO:

Katherine’s passion for songwriting began with a 13 dollar guitar ordered from the Sears Catalogue. And, she has come a long way since her “Learn Your Roots” opening spot for Ian Tyson, in the days when she had a cassette for sale.

She made Straight Line and Habits and Heroes to critical acclaim in the 90’s, and with offhand wit and an infectious passion for performing, she has been captivating audiences in North America to maintain a loyal fanbase since.

In the vein of Shawn Colvin, Andrea Ramolo and Roxanne Potvin Wheatley mines her life for pearls in the dirt of heartache, without navel gazing. Her work is a perfect combination of personal and universal, and audiences find something of themselves in her songs.

In a former life, Wheatley worked for the Canadian Geological Survey. Then - music was her hobby. Now - as she travels between shows on highways where the rock cuts show the earth’s history, geology has become her hobby. The landscapes continue to inspire her songs.

Where To Tap? A Story About The Price of Knowledge

When I worked in banking, I used to tell a story to make a point about the VALUE of working smart. Nowadays I like to tell Left-brain MARKETING Clients they should hire me, and trust that I will know where to "tap" their career! The story goes like this:

Early on shift one morning, an entire, big, huge, important manufacturing plant had to stop work when a big important machine stopped functioning. The operator of the machine couldn't get it going. The supervisor couldn't get it going. The boss's boss tried too - to no avail. This was a costly shut down -- nothing was proceeding.

So, by lunch time an expert was called in.

After examining the machine for just a couple minutes, the expert pulled a hammer out of the tool kit and tapped the machine. It instantly began running, functioning at full capacity, and kickstarting the whole plant again.

The expert then issued the plant supervisor an invoice of $1000, and the plant supervisor hit the roof. He didn't see the value of the work the expert had done with that tiny tap and insisted on a breakdown of services.

The service provider issued an itemized bill:

This was an initiative I invented and implemented with a branch that had just opened beside a grocery store. With the approval of the Regional Manager, me and a bunch of other bankers stood around all day chatting up grocery shoppers - offering a taste of what TD offered and getting ballots completed with name and address deets for use in future solicitation. We used a turkey raffle for Thanksgiving, as our conversation starter.

I forget what sassy response lines I scripted, for the witty customer ojections. And I don't recall what samples we offerred to support the TD Taste test claim. To be honest, I can't cite our follow up sales stats the intiative, they were pretty good.

But there is one important fact I remember. I will not forget when the sharp suited SVP two offices down from mine actually approved of such a creative and goofy initiative. I admit I was surprised when he recognized and complimented me in front of our entire Divisional Office, and mentioned it again in front of 3,000 people at ye olde sales rally (which, I should also tell you about)!

while taking phone calls in customer care as a temp thing thru the merger, i got a call from a guy in Risk Management who said he'd had a heck of a time hunting me down. i was surprised he'd found me at all. he wanted to know EXACTLY what was said and done for the clients around the robbery-homicide thing, and he'd understood i was the point person with The Public on that. He was after specifics now he said, because there was a guy making a claim that his son’s life had been devasted when he watched the thing go down while his mom was inside. She was pretty much still a wreck about it also. So, what did we do to offer to help them way back when???

1) make a habit of asking for permission to join a conversation already in progress. simply say "i am sorry to interrupt, but i just wanted to introduce myself" -- become part of the conversation.

2) seek out the singles. if you see someone alone, approach them and strike up a conversation... in the mock networking event one introverted leader had two jobs to offer but was left isolated and alone for over 15 minutes.

3) make connections -- BE impressed rather than trying TO impress

4) Meet, Engage, Business Card, Exit.
talk to someone for 4 or 5 minutes rather than hogging their time. if you can't think of a natural way out of the conversation, introduce them to someone!

and its true that i never told my boss that the very first time i forgot to protect the money, by locking the vault door. they way it turned out, it wasn't relevant right, so why go out of your way pointing out ways you can do it better next time??? i always said the promoted me to "get that girl AWAY from the money"

made a joke on our way out of the building after the course this afternoon.

this was a course, incidentally, where i walked in and said "whew geesh, its about a time a woman showed up here eh? LOOK at this group"

so when we're all leaving, as a big male but me group to get in the elevator i ask if we are all gonna fit or if we'll need to break out into smaller teams or what. there was a joke about no worries we shall all fit and with luck we'll get the one with the padded sides, just as one arrived and we all piled in.

as the elevator doors closed i responded to the joke with the story of cramming my way onto an elevator in tokyo and then about 100 more piled in after me and how then the doors only partially closed before opening again with an alarm beep like the car was overweight, every single other passenger on the elevator was looking at "ME, like I was the heavy one..."

i was pleased when mr engineer (who spoke over my turn when we went around the table introducing ourselves) couldn't help but chuckle for the rest of the ride.

i will document my course feedback separately, unsolicited even, because i thought the presenter did a gr8 job! SHE had a tough crowd indeed ha.

you CAN ask someone out to your favourite food court stinky lunch and grill them while THEY pay, and enjoy the food. and laugh at ill advised jokes about transgender operation discussions causing heart attacks?

talk about a good day! even though it was at the cost of fumbling around to hand out a biz card, i am glad that i carried the rest of my meal around instead/afterwards, because the street person i gave it to looked sincerely grateful for the nourishment.

and that's before he even knew how tasty my favourite chana is...

it takes SIX TIMES the resources to get a new customer as it does to keep an old one. So,

1) make sure past listeners return for the next podcast.

2) NOTIFIY potential listeners by e-mail, and e-news rather than just expecting them to get an rss feed to work This welcomes (i.e. makes the podcasts repeatedly accessible to) the less technically inclined. It would also, by the way, make it easier for them to suggest podcast listening to their friends… basically i feel the broadcaster is are trying to teach podcast listening to the potential listeners, as in you are selling the technology just like the musicians are/should be.

3) what about some kind of specialty employee/community news podcast notification/mamrketing. Like replete with advertized Special Listener offers???

i am referring to a story he told once at a harbourfront reading in tribute to carol sheilds. there were a bunch of famous writers there all reading excerpts from her latest book to launch it (since she was too sick to).

he told of being a young writer, on his very first book tour. after several successful readings he found himself in a strange town in a nice bookstore, one of two in the area. unfortunately, he went on to explain, there was a HUGE event on at the competition and clearly, it had won the local draw, as there were two people in the aisles when it came time to begin. three people including the store manager would hear him read. he was devastated and found it horribly awkward...

nino ricci, in front of the sold out crowd that nite, was touching and engaging as he spoke and he said that the woman who took the seat in the front row, just had an air about her that said "well, come on then, let's have a READING." and he responded to her attitude and he was able to gather the stregnth to read like there was indeed a suitably sized receptive crowd.

and he was astounded to learn through the introductions later that the woman in front was carol sheilds and the one in the back was sandra birdsell. his heros were his disappointing crowd?!

in the poetry circle that fell out of ken's class, after denice and i had our "features" we used to encourage each other to "nino-ricci-it" when required...
