BIO
What started out as an adventurous folk - bluegrass quartet is fast becoming a sharply focused roots music outfit that owes as much to The Band and Blue Rodeo as it does to Bill Monroe and John Hartford.
Nominated previously for 2 Canadian Folk Music Awards, five-piece Vancouver roots outfit The Breakmen are touring in support of their third full-length release, with several performances throughout Ontario.
With Heartwood, The Breakmen plough fertile new ground. The signature sound is still evident, but you’ll also hear touches of soul, classic r&b, a bit of country and a solid taste of roots rock n’ roll.
Members Matthew Lawson, Archie Pateman, Ben Rogalsky and Lee Watson are moving toward more contemporary material and a tougher approach. The band’s new record fits perfectly into the roots/rock “Americana” genre. There are 10 original songs by band members Pateman and Watson. — and a song from the reclusive Toronto singer Mary Margaret O’Hara. Heartwood debuted on National Campus Radio at Number 1 upon release of the new recording. The album has continued to chart across Canada and the United States for nearly a year.
“Like Ben Franklin with his kite, we are certainly messing with electricity — and in fact Lee Watson (band luthier) is making Telecaster-styled electric guitars specifically for this tour, new directions can be challenging and inspiring at the same time,” Lawson says.
