When I worked in banking, I used to tell a story to make a point about the VALUE of working smart. Nowadays I like to tell Left-brain MARKETING Clients they should hire me, and trust that I will know where to "tap" their career! The story goes like this:
Early on shift one morning, an entire, big, huge, important manufacturing plant had to stop work when a big important machine stopped functioning. The operator of the machine couldn't get it going. The supervisor couldn't get it going. The boss's boss tried too - to no avail. This was a costly shut down -- nothing was proceeding.
So, by lunch time an expert was called in.
After examining the machine for just a couple minutes, the expert pulled a hammer out of the tool kit and tapped the machine. It instantly began running, functioning at full capacity, and kickstarting the whole plant again.
The expert then issued the plant supervisor an invoice of $1000, and the plant supervisor hit the roof. He didn't see the value of the work the expert had done with that tiny tap and insisted on a breakdown of services.
The service provider issued an itemized bill:
for tapping machine $1
for knowing where to tap $999
