Networking

from the insider's guide to networking

1) make a habit of asking for permission to join a conversation already in progress. simply say "i am sorry to interrupt, but i just wanted to introduce myself" -- become part of the conversation.

2) seek out the singles. if you see someone alone, approach them and strike up a conversation... in the mock networking event one introverted leader had two jobs to offer but was left isolated and alone for over 15 minutes.

3) make connections -- BE impressed rather than trying TO impress

4) Meet, Engage, Business Card, Exit.
talk to someone for 4 or 5 minutes rather than hogging their time. if you can't think of a natural way out of the conversation, introduce them to someone!

weird ideas for future?
a) eavesdrop on the go train
b) network with dentist, doctor, gas stn, grocery store. Just Do It! force yourself...
c) pick up the phone. promote yourself. ask for a job.
d) go places you don't usually go
e) ask one more question

remember the hit the ground running campaign
who are the recruiters in my industry???

stats =

70 outbound calls net 25 contacts

5% had written down their goals, but 95% of THOSE acheived said goals

40% of contract to hire go permanent

useful questions:
have you heard of anything at your company?
have you heard of anything elsewhere?
